Day 1 - July 7, 2000
Arrive at Pearson Airport on a hot sweaty and humid summer day....at the special services check in counter, they look suspiciously at our plastic canoe barrels, packs. As campers, we get the 3rd degree about flying with stoves, fuel bottles and fire arms. We don’t want to unpack our carefully fitted packs - can’t they just x-ray them? Finally, we get the green light, our bags disappear, we hope to see them again in Yellowknife.
Flight is uneventful...delay in Edmonton for 1 hour. Summer madness. Happily we and our baggage arrive in Yellowknife by 10pm. The rest of our group has preceded us, as every one and all gear is accounted for. Having been to Yellowknife 10 years ago, I was astounded to see the new construction, fancy houses and apparently robust local economy...diamond mine drive I suppose....bugs are just as annoying then as now! Hot and humid in town same as what I was trying to escape in southern Ontario...thundershowers build, blood red sunset as we collapse into a snug bed at Captain Ron’s B & B....
